Doheny Mansion, Mount St. Mary's College
Designed by Sumner P. Hunt and Theodore Eisen in 1899, the Doheny Mansion at 8 Chester Place was for over fifty years the primary residence of Edward L. and Carrie Estelle Doheny, one of the most important families in Los Angeles history.
After Mrs. Doheny's death in 1958, Chester Place was donated to the Catholic Church, which subsequently designated it as the Doheny Campus of Mount St. Mary's College in 1962. In 1994, the mansion suffered flooding from a burst pipe, which necessitated replacement of the wood of the first floors as well as exterior damage from the Northridge earthquake.
With funding by a Getty Foundation Preserve LA Grant, Mount St. Mary's hired HRG to prepare an Historic Structure Report to identify the significant features and spaces of the house, plan for future maintenance and provide recommendations for treatments ranging from housekeeping to physical repairs to administrative management and record-keeping. HRG completed the report in February 2006.
