Angels Flight Funicular Railway
Historic Resources Group was the historic preservation consultant for the
rehabilitation of the Angels Flight Funicular Railway. Angels Flight was removed from its
Bunker Hill location by
the Community Redevelopment Agency in 1969 and placed in storage.
Twenty-five years later, components of the railway, including the historic
station house, two rail cars, and the gateway arch were reinstalled along new
tracks two blocks
from its historic location. Historic Resources Group
prepared a comprehensive Historic
Structure Report that reported on both the physical
and historical aspects of the structure. The Historic Structure Report
facilitated the accurate
restoration of the railway, one of Los Angeles' most beloved landmarks, in accordance with
the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation. The
rehabilitation was recognized by the Los Angeles Conservancy with a 1996
Preservation Award.
Historic Resources Group conducted plan
review and construction
monitoring as the railway's components were rehabilitated and
reinstalled to assure that the integrity of significant
materials and systems were retained and missing features accurately
replicated. In addition, Historic Resources Group prepared a children's
activity book, distributed free at the railway's opening festivities in 1995, to
encourage children and their parents to learn more about Angels Flight.
