PALACE THEATRE

1735 N. Vine St.

(Gogerty and Weyl, architects; 1926)

Designed in the flamboyant Spanish Colonial Revival style, this theatre was originally known as the Hollywood Playhouse. It was one of four major legitimate theaters built in the 1920s in Hollywood.

CAPITOL RECORDS

1750 N. Vine St.

(Welton Becket & Associates, architects; 1954)

A true "landmark," the round tower of this International style building is said to resemble a stack of 45 rpm records stacked on a phonograph.

DANCE STUDIO

6274-84 Yucca St.

(H. L. Gogerty, architect; 1930)

This diminutive example of the Art Deco style in a commercial structure was designed by Gogerty to complement its neighbor across the street at 6305 Yucca. Although small in scale, the building exhibits the stylized detail associated with the era.

YUCCA VINE TOWER

6305-09 Yucca St.

(H.L. Gogerty, architect; 1928)

One of Hollywood's most distinctive Art Deco office towers, the building is an example of master craftsmanship in its attention to detail. Look for the stylized eagles at the top of the tower.

IVAR HILL NEIGHBORHOOD

1800 Block of North Ivar Ave.

This block of Ivar continues to reflect life in Hollywood in the early 1920s. The residential buildings on this street were built in the revival styles popular throughout Southern California at the time. Of particular note is the bungalow court at 1812, built in 1922 and designed in an American Colonial Revival style. There are two examples of Tudor Revival apartments, the Holly Arms at 1817 (home to renowned author Nathaniel West) and the Ivar Hill Apartments at 1825. Crowning the top of Ivar Hill are two Spanish Colonial Revival masterpieces, the Alto Nido Apartments at 1851 and its companion at 1850. Fans of "Sunset Boulevard" may recognize the Alto Nido as the home of writer Joe Gillis.

HALIFAX APARTMENTS

6376 Yucca St.

(Walker & Eisen, architects; 1925)

Originally known as the Cross Creek Apartments, this Renaissance Revival/Beaux Arts style building is representative of apartment houses of the era with its arched openings and brick facade. Situated close to the Boulevard, it was just a few minutes walk to fashionable boutiques and cafes.
